Did you know that the Women's Institute is the largest women's organisation
in the country? Boddington WI was formed in 1921 and is one of about
6,800 WIs in the UK.
We have a membership of over 30 members from Lower and Upper Boddington
and the surrounding area. We are a friendly group and would extend a
very warm welcome to new members. If you would like further information
please contact Madeline Knowles.
Boddington WI meet in the upper room of the village hall at 7.30pm on
the second Wednesday of each month. Our programmes of events for these
evenings include an interesting variety of guest speakers and organised
local outings.
"Pot Luck" suppers were started in 1972 and continue to
this day. These evenings are without a speaker or WI business, therefore
giving us an opportunity to have a good chat and enjoy delicious homemade
food provided by the members. Our summer Garden Parties are a great
success and very popular with our partners too. Most importantly many
new and long lasting friendships are forged through membership of the
WI.
In addition to our monthly programme we enjoy supporting any fund
raising events within the village, such as the Rural Markets. For the
last 17 years we have run a spring and autumn jumble sale, raising
thousands of pounds which is used to help local projects and to provide
a bi-annual bursary to enable a member to attend the WI Denman College,
on a course of their choice.
Two seats were provided by the WI. The first in 1966, to celebrate
the WI's Golden Jubilee is sited on The Buckle between Upper and Lower
Boddington, affording splendid views across the fields to the Dassett
Hills. The second seat celebrating the 75th Anniversary is near the
village shop and is used by parents waiting to collect their children
from school. A time capsule was placed behind the commemorative plaque.
We do hope that reading about our WI will inspire you to come along,
bring a friend and find out yourself what a happy and welcoming group
of ladies we are.
